Robert Reich: Friends, America is on the brink of a full-scale war with Iran — but no one is willing to say exactly why, including the occupant of the Oval Office.

But there are clues.

The U.S.S. Gerald R. Ford, the world’s largest aircraft carrier, is en route from the Caribbean Sea to the Middle East. It should arrive there within days. The U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier and three guided-missile destroyers are already there.

As the world’s largest armada assembles near Iran, a second round of talks between the U.S. and Iran has just concluded, apparently without getting anywhere. Meanwhile, Tehran is conducting military drills in the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial choke point for the world’s oil.

Americans have never had exceedingly long attention spans, but the last year of Trump “flooding the zone” has further shortened them. To refresh memories:

In late June, Trump claimed that U.S. strikes on three Iranian nuclear sites had been “a spectacular military success” and that “Iran’s key nuclear enrichment facilities have been completely and totally obliterated.” He told reporters that “Iran’s not going to have a nuclear weapon. I think it’s the last thing on their mind right now.”

Nearly six months later, in early January, when Iranians took to the streets, Trump warned that if Iran threatened protesters’ lives, the U.S. would “come to their rescue.” He said, “We are locked and loaded, and ready to go.”

As the reported death toll in the protests soared into the hundreds, Trump urged the protesters to take over Iranian institutions and log the names of their “killers and abusers.” “HELP IS ON ITS WAY,” he posted in all caps. “Iran is looking at FREEDOM, perhaps like never before. The USA stands ready to help!!!.”

Yet despite reports that as many as 3,428 Iranians had been killed and that more executions were imminent, no help was on its way. Many Iranians said they felt betrayed and confused by Trump’s failure to act.

By the fourth week of January, Trump once again talked about Iran, saying, “We have a lot of ships going that direction, just in case.”

In case of what? By then the death toll in Iran was said to be more than 5,000 (some reports had it many times higher), but Trump no longer even mentioned Iran’s brutal crackdown.

On January 28, with U.S. ships assembling in the Middle East, Trump said of the armada, “like with Venezuela, it is ready, willing, and able to rapidly fulfill its mission, with speed and violence, if necessary.”

What exactly was this “mission?” And why did Trump compare it to the mission in Venezuela? It was a clue.

Last week, Trump warned that the U.S. would attack Iran unless it made a “deal” and has “NO NUCLEAR WEAPONS.”

But the Trump regime’s apparent objectives have shifted once again.

Yesterday — after a second round of talks between Iran and the United States concluded in Geneva without any breakthrough, and Iran insisted that the talks be strictly limited to its nuclear program — U.S. officials said they’re pushing to curb all of Iran’s ballistic missiles and its support of militias across the region.

In an interview with Fox News yesterday, JD Vance said the Iranians aren’t acknowledging some “red lines” that Trump has set, but Vance didn’t say what those red lines were.

I wouldn’t be as worried if we had a thoughtful person in the Oval Office, a competent secretary of defense, and a secretary of state who seemed to be in charge.

But we don’t have any of them.

The United States is being represented in the talks by “Special Envoy” Steve Witkoff (whose son is the chief executive of World Liberty Financial, the Trump family’s cryptocurrency company, nearly half of which was purchased last year for $500 million by an investment firm tied to the United Arab Emirates).

And by Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner (who’s been making private deals with the Saudis and who raised several billion dollars before Trump’s second term from overseas investors including sovereign wealth funds of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates).

No one from the State Department. Nobody from the National Security Council. No one who knows much of anything about Iran.

So what’s the real goal?

On Friday, in a little-noticed remark, Trump said “the best thing that could happen” in Iran would be regime change, noting “there are people” who could take over from Iran’s Islamic ruler Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Bingo.

Trump promised his MAGA base that he wouldn’t be involved in seeking regime changes abroad. But that was before he abducted Venezuela’s Nicholás Maduro and replaced him with Maduro’s vice president.

Yet regime change in Iran would be far, far more difficult to pull off than regime change in Venezuela. The Middle East has demonstrated that it can swallow up America, even with the largest fighting force in the world. Anyone remember Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq, and … Iran?

The U.S. public was told that Trump was going to strike Iranian nuclear sites if Iran didn't stop launching missiles at Israel.

But behind the scenes the U.S. made a deal with Iran to end the conflict: the U.S. asked Iran to allow the U.S. military to strike a particular nuclear site and make the public claim that the U.S. "took out" Iran's ambitions and ability to build a nuclear bomb.

Trump gave Iran advance notice of the U.S. attack so Iran could remove its equipment from the targeted nuclear site and so Iran would not shoot down the line of B-2 bombers flying deep into Iran to strike the particular nuclear site.

Most Americans don't know that U.S. B-2 bombers are virtually ineffective against viable air defenses because B-2 bombers fly relatively slow for a military jet - only about 550 MPH - as slow as a commercial 767 jet.

Most Americans don't know that when the B-2 was designed and offered for action, some experts voiced concern that the B-2 was too slow-moving to be put into production and use, but U.S. defense contractors and the Pentagon said don't worry, the B-2 is for use in Iraq and Afghanistan, where they have no viable anti-aircraft systems and whatever anti-aircraft systems they do have will be taken out by pre-emptive missile strikes.

Iran accepted Trump's offer and subsequently removed their equipment and material from the targeted site before the string of B-2s flew at midnight deep into Iran to strike the pre-arranged nuclear site.

That's how eight slow-moving B-2 bombers made their way deep inside Iran without being destroyed by Iranian systems and how they made it back out of Iran unmolested.

Trump declared victory and Iran ended the exchange to regroup and prepare for another Israeli first strike on Iran.

Remember, Israel started the 12-Day War by striking an Iranian embassy with Israeli missiles, which kicked off the missile exchange and war.

So far Donald Trump has NOT launched any U.S. first strike on Iran.

Trump really does want peace in the Middle East; but why?

Precisely because Donald Trump Inc. owns Trump hotels in Arab states and enjoys incredible stakes in Arab productivity in the Middle East: oil and gas pielines, mineral rights and extractions, commerical and entertainment venues and tourism.

Israel's national goal of achieving "Greater Israel" is what has been driving Israeli lobby control of U.S. Presidents, Senators and Congresspersons for decades.

Virtually every U.S. President, Senator and Congressperson has accepted Israeli lobby campaign contributions and have literally signed an actual pledge to Israel to vote the AIPAC way or face new AIPAC opposition in the next election cycle.

Iran retaliated exactly as Iran told Trump: Iran fired missiles at a U.S. camp in Iraq, injuring U.S. soldiers and destroying the small U.S. encampment on an Iraqi military base.

Trump decided not to respond to Iran's attack on the U.S. encampment and the exchange ended - much to the chagrin of Netanyahu and the Israeli camp inside the U.S. Pentagon.

SP contends that Trump didn't retaliate because the Pentagon advised Trump not to respond because Iran was capable of further destroying U.S. bases and targets near Iran and was capable of writing the final chapter of Israel.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he’s given his advisers instructions to obliterate Iran if it assassinates him.

“If they did that they would be obliterated,” Trump said in an exchange with reporters while signing an executive order calling for the U.S. government to impose maximum pressure on Tehran. “I’ve left instructions if they do it, they get obliterated, there won’t be anything left.”

Trump ordered the 2020 killing of Qassem Soleimani, who led the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force.

Why does Trump do a lot of huffing and puffing about "The U.S. has the strongest military in the world" and warns Iran not to attack the U.S. and Israel?

SP contends the Pentagon informed Trump the results of Pentagon computer-simulated war games between the U.S. and Iran; that Iran had the capability to strike virtually every U.S. military base surrounding Iran and destroy U.S. Navy surface fleets in the region, sending U.S. soldiers home to Dover Air Force Base in flag-draped coffins - something Trump didn't want any part of.

Trump hated the results and bloviated accordingly, i.e., "The U.S. has the strongest military in the world" and warning Iran that the U.S. would "obliterate Iran" if Iran attacked Israel.

It's worth mentioning that when Hillary Clinton ran for President, Hillary campaigned on her promise to "totally obliterate Iran" if Iran attacked Israel.

WASHINGTON, (Reuters) - Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton warned Tehran on Tuesday that if she were president, the United States could "totally obliterate" Iran in retaliation for a nuclear strike against Israel.

SP: Trump is threatening war with Iran again for several reasons:

To appease and satisfy Netanyahu and the Israeli lobby;

To put pressure on Iran to reach a deal with Trump on nuclear weapons;

To make Trump appear relevant and powerful.

Trump will never appease and satisfy Netanyahu and the Israeli lobby until Trump attacks Iran and targets Iranian leadership: regime change.

Trump doesn't realize or care that Trump cannot force Iran to make changes by threat of use of U.S. military force.

Trump is becoming less relevant and powerful as each day passes towards the 2026 midterm elections.

Trump will not attack Iran again because Trump doesn't want U.S. service personnel coming home to Dover Air Force Base in flag-draped coffins because Trump's vanity rejects the idea and images of U.S. soldiers coming home in flag-draped coffins by the hundreds and thousands.

The Pentagon has informed Trump that U.S. surface fleets are sitting ducks for Iran's evasive hypersonic missiles and the U.S. has no ability to stop or even prevent an Iranian evasive hypersonic missile attack on U.S. surface ships: aircraft carriers, destroyers, etc.

Trump disregarded Pentagon warnings and sent U.S. surface fleets to Iran anyway, because Trump has no intention of initiating a U.S. attack on Iran.

Netanyahu met with Trump more than seven times in recent months attempting to con Trump into launching a U.S. attack on Iranian leadership and Iran itself: regime change.

Each time Trump has rejected Netanyahu's demand that Trump launch a major U.S. attack on Iran.

NETANYAHU AND IRAN

Why are Netanyahu and Israel determined and committed to destroying Iran's military and executing regime change in Iran?

One answer to that question is that Netanyahu and Israeli officials complain that Iran is funding and arming Hezbollah and Hamas and consequently Iran should be destroyed.

Netanyahu and Israeli officials blame Iran for Israel's inability to eliminate Hamas and Hezbollah.

State of Israel founder Ben Gurion was born and raised in the Soviet Union and applied for a Palestinian passport to fulfill his written dream and plan to migrate to Palestine, form armed terrorist gangs with his fellow Zionists and literally kill and drive Palestinians from their homeland to establish the State of Israel on Palestinian land.

In 1947 and 1948 Ben Gurion and his armed terrorist gangs did in fact attack and murder thousands of Palestinians in their homes, displacing nearly one million Palestinians from their homeland.

Once Ben Gurion established the State of Israel on Palestinian land, Ben Gurion was not content to remain within Israel's U.N. defined territorial boundaries and began stealing more Palestinian land by use of military force.

On June 8, 1967 Israel invaded Palestine's Gaza and Syria's Golan Heights, killing Palestinians during the invasion and subsequent occupation.

On November 22, 1967 the world community came together at the United Nations and issued U.N. Resolution 242 ORDERING ISRAEL OUT OF THE PALESTINIAN TERRITORIES AND GOLAN HEIGHTS.

To this day Israel refuses to comply with U.N. Res. 242, refuses to recognize Palestinians' Right of Return and refuses to withdraw back to Israel's original borders as set forth in 1948 when the State of Israel was established.

Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly stated that under no circumstances will Israel ever comply with U.N. Res. 242.

Israel killed more Palestinians and stole more land which galvanized the Palestinian people in 1984 into forming a Palestinian resistance force known as Hamas.

Hamas members were the surviving children of those Palestinians killed and displaced by Ben Gurion's terrorist gangs.

The one million Palestinians displaced by Ben Gurion and his armed terrorist gangs fled into the area now known as Gaza.

To this day Israel still maintains their illegal military blockade of millions of Palestinians inside Gaza by land, sea and air, creating the world's largest open air prison camp known as Gaza.

Since Israel invaded the Palestinian territories Israel has consistently violated int'l law and U.N. Res. 242 by unlawfully expanding the boundaries of the State of Israel by use of Israeli military force and American weaponry and equipment.

HOW ISRAEL ILLEGALLY EXPANDED THE BOUNDARIES OF THE STATE OF ISRAEL BY "SWATTING THE HORNET'S NEST"

Since Israel began occupying Palestinian land and blockading millions of Palestinians inside Gaza, there were periods of no Israeli or Hamas military activity or what some may call "Peace."

Those periods of "Peace" were interrupted by the sitting Israeli Prime Minister ordering Israeli police and settlers to "Swat the Hornet's Nest" to instigate war with Hamas.

Each Israeli Prime Minister faced internal societal and administrative pressure to expand the boundaries of the State of Israel by use of Israel's superior military force.

This recurring internal pressure motivated the sitting PM to order Israeli police and settlers to "Swat The Hornet's Nest" to motivate Hamas to attack Israel in response and revenge for Israel "Swatting the Hornet's Nest."

What is "Swatting the Hornet's Nest?"

"Swatting the Hornet's Nest" is when an Israeli Prime Minister orders Israeli police and settlers to attack Palestinian worshippers during prayer service inside the Al Aqsa Mosque.

GENEVA – Israel has committed genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel said in a new report today. The Commission urges Israel and all States to fulfil their legal obligations under international law to end the genocide and punish those responsible for it.

The Commission has been investigating the events on and since 7 October 2023 for the last two years, and concluded that Israeli authorities and Israeli security forces committed four of the five genocidal acts defined by the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, namely killing, causing serious bodily or mental harm, deliberately inflicting conditions of life calculated to bring about the destruction of the Palestinians in whole or in part, and imposing measures intended to prevent births.

Explicit statements by Israeli civilian and military authorities and the pattern of conduct of the Israeli security forces indicate that the genocidal acts were committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, Palestinians in the Gaza Strip as a group.

“The Commission finds that Israel is responsible for the commission of genocide in Gaza,” said Navi Pillay, Chair of the Commission. “It is clear that there is an intent to destroy the Palestinians in Gaza through acts that meet the criteria set forth in the Genocide Convention.”

“The responsibility for these atrocity crimes lies with Israeli authorities at the highest echelons who have orchestrated a genocidal campaign for almost two years now with the specific intent to destroy the Palestinian group in Gaza,” Pillay said. “The Commission also finds that Israel has failed to prevent and punish the commission of genocide, through failure to investigate genocidal acts and to prosecute alleged perpetrators.”

The report is based on all the Commission’s prior investigations, as well as factual and legal findings in relation to attacks in Gaza carried out by Israeli forces, and the conduct and statements of Israeli authorities from 7 October 2023 until 31 July 2025. The Commission’s findings are based on a comprehensive examination of the underlying acts of genocide (actus reus) and genocidal intent (dolus specialis).

In establishing the genocidal acts, the Commission examined the Israeli military operations in Gaza, including killing and seriously harming unprecedented numbers of Palestinians; imposing a total siege, including blocking humanitarian aid leading to starvation; systematically destroying the healthcare and education systems in Gaza; committing systematic acts of sexual and gender based violence; directly targeting children; carrying out systematic and widespread attacks on religious and cultural sites; and disregarding the orders of the International Court of Justice.

In establishing genocidal intent, the Commission applied the “only reasonable inference” standard set forth by the International Court of Justice in the case of Bosnia v. Serbia. The Commission analysed statements made by Israeli authorities and concluded that those statements are direct evidence of genocidal intent. The Commission also analysed the pattern of conduct of Israeli authorities and the Israeli security forces in Gaza, including imposing starvation and inhumane conditions of life for Palestinians in Gaza, and found that genocidal intent was the only reasonable inference that could be concluded from the nature of their operations.

“Israel has flagrantly disregarded the orders for provisional measures from the International Court of Justice and warnings from Member States, UN offices, human rights organisations and civil society groups, and continued the strategy of destruction of the Palestinians in Gaza,” said Pillay. “The Commission finds that the Israeli authorities had no intention to change their course of actions. On the contrary, Israeli authorities have persisted and continued with their genocidal campaign in Gaza for almost two years now. Israel must immediately end the genocide in Gaza and comply fully with the orders for provisional measures of the International Court of Justice,” she added.

The acts of Israeli political and military leaders are attributable to the State of Israel. The Commission therefore concluded that the State of Israel bears responsibility for the failure to prevent genocide, the commission of genocide and the failure to punish the perpetrators of genocide against the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

The Commission also concluded that Israeli President Isaac Herzog, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and then Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, have incited the commission of genocide and that Israeli authorities have failed to take action against them to punish this incitement. The Commission has not fully assessed statements by other Israeli political and military leaders and considers that they too should be assessed to determine whether they constitute incitement to commit genocide.

The Commission urges the Government of Israel to comply immediately with its international legal obligations, including to end the genocide in the Gaza Strip and fully implement the provisional measures orders of the International Court of Justice.

Israel must end its policy of starvation, lift the siege and facilitate and ensure the unimpeded access of humanitarian aid at scale and unhindered access of all United Nations staff, including UNRWA and OHCHR international staff, and all recognized international humanitarian agencies delivering and coordinating aid. The Commission calls on Israel to immediately end the activities of the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation.

The Commission recommended that Member States cease the transfer of arms and other equipment that may be used for the commission of genocidal acts to Israel; ensure individuals and corporations in their territories and within their jurisdiction are not involved in aiding and assisting the commission of genocide or incitement to commit genocide; and take action on accountability through investigations and legal proceedings against individuals or corporations that are involved in the genocide directly or indirectly.

“The international community cannot stay silent on the genocidal campaign launched by Israel against the Palestinian people in Gaza. When clear signs and evidence of genocide emerge, the absence of action to stop it amounts to complicity,” said Pillay. “Every day of inaction costs lives and erodes the credibility of the international community. All States are under a legal obligation to use all means that are reasonably available to them to stop the genocide in Gaza,” she added.
